Wash Blankets and Throws by Checking Weight, Construction and Drying Space

Blanket care depends on more than fabric color. Check the label, construction, bulk and drying method before deciding whether your home equipment can handle the item. Weighted, electric and specialty blankets need their own instructions.

Check the Care Label First

Look for washing temperature, cycle, detergent, drying instructions, and whether the blanket should be hand-washed or professionally cleaned.

Check Your Washer Capacity

A bulky blanket needs room to move. If it barely fits into the drum when dry, it may become too heavy or wash poorly once saturated. Follow your appliance manufacturer’s load guidance.

Shake Out Loose Debris

Remove loose pet hair, crumbs, and surface debris before washing. A quick shake outdoors or a suitable vacuum attachment can help if the fabric allows.

Pre-Treat Small Spots Carefully

Use a product appropriate for the fabric and test unfamiliar treatments in an inconspicuous area. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that may distort knits or delicate fibers.

Too much detergent can be difficult to rinse from a thick blanket. Follow detergent directions and adjust for the load size and appliance type.

Dry Completely

Blankets must be completely dry before they are folded or stored. Thick areas can remain damp even when the outside feels dry, so check carefully.

Air-Drying Large Blankets

If the care label allows air drying, spread the blanket so air can circulate. Support heavy wet fabrics evenly to reduce stretching.

Do Not Store Damp Textiles

Moisture trapped in folded blankets can create stale odors. Wait until the fabric is fully dry and cool before placing it in a basket or closet.

How Often Should You Wash Blankets?

Frequency depends on how the blanket is used, whether pets share it, the season, and whether it contacts the body directly. Wash it when it is visibly soiled or no longer feels fresh, while respecting the fabric’s care requirements.

For a simpler weekly system, see our weekly laundry routine.

Inspect the blanket after drying

Open folded layers and check thick edges according to the approved drying method. A blanket that seems dry on the outside can retain moisture in a bunched section. Store it only after drying is complete.

If the care method requires equipment or expertise you do not have, arrange an appropriate service. Keep the blanket’s identity and instructions available for that conversation. A light throw and a bulky specialty blanket should not automatically share the same household routine.
