Home Checklist Before Vacation: Assign Food, Access and Follow-Up Tasks
A pre-vacation home check works best when important jobs have a responsible person and a clear completion point. Review food, waste, moisture, access and home-specific equipment before the final departure rush.
A pre-vacation home check works best when important jobs have a responsible person and a clear completion point. Review food, waste, moisture, access and home-specific equipment before the final departure rush.
Make a departure sheet you can reuse
| Area | Decision before leaving | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Food and waste | Use, store or dispose appropriately | What still needs attention on departure day |
| Deliveries and access | Arrange necessary collection or authorized entry | Who has instructions and the correct contact |
| Plants and pets | Make specific care arrangements | Named person and confirmed schedule |
| Equipment and water | Follow the manual or property guidance | Any approved setting or action you changed |
Use Up or Store Perishable Food
Check the refrigerator for food likely to spoil while you are away. Eat it, freeze it if appropriate, or dispose of it before leaving.
Take Out Trash and Recycling
Empty kitchen and bathroom bins, especially anything containing food. Clean obvious spills so you do not return to unpleasant odors.
Wash Dishes and Reset the Sink
Run or empty the dishwasher as needed, wash remaining dishes, and leave the sink area clean and dry.
Handle Laundry
Do not leave wet laundry in the washer or damp towels in a pile. Dry items completely and leave laundry spaces in a stable condition.
Check Windows and Exterior Doors
Confirm that windows and doors are closed or secured as appropriate for your home. Do not rely on memory—make this part of your final walk-through.
Review Appliances
Check cooking appliances, small countertop appliances, and other equipment. Follow manufacturer guidance about what should remain powered, unplugged, or in standby while you are away.
Consider Water and Plumbing
If you plan to change water settings or shut off a supply, only do so when it is appropriate for your plumbing, heating, appliances, climate, and property. Ask a qualified professional when unsure.
Adjust Heating or Cooling Responsibly
Do not simply turn climate systems off without considering weather, pets, humidity, plumbing, and manufacturer recommendations. Use a safe away setting for your property.
Pause or Plan Deliveries
Review mail, packages, grocery subscriptions, and other regular deliveries. Use official hold services or a trusted person when appropriate.
Prepare for Pets and Plants
Confirm care arrangements, supplies, feeding instructions, medication guidance, and emergency contact details before departure.
Do a Final Five-Minute Walk-Through
- Kitchen clear
- Trash out
- Wet laundry handled
- Windows and doors checked
- Appliances reviewed
- Lights and climate set as planned
Keep a Reusable Vacation Checklist
Save the checklist in your phone so you do not recreate it for every trip. Add home-specific items such as irrigation, alarm systems, pet routines, or building requirements.
Separate early preparation from the final walk-through
Handle arrangements such as pet care and deliveries before the last day. Save the final sheet for checks that must happen near departure, such as emptying food waste and closing appropriate access points.
Do not disconnect equipment, disable safety devices or change water and climate settings from a generic list. Your building, climate and equipment determine suitable actions. Leave useful instructions for an authorized helper, including how to report a new leak or other problem while you are away.
